Who Controls the World

Is “GOD”, “human” or “Satan” in control of everything in this world? Let me share you this slippery-slope-kind-of-questioning-we-encountered today.

Along our usual afternoon track, we stopped at a nearby bench at the beachfront to quench our thirst and eat quail’s eggs. Suddenly, two young adults holding familiar pamphlets approached us (Of course, this idea of Christian Protestants is no longer new to my sister and I because some of our acquaintances do the same kind of mission).

“Do you mind if we get a short hold of your time?” The young man asked. A young woman was beside him, smiling, sweetly.

I was thinking of a tactful way to answer them “NO” so as not to offend them. As a speaker, I can feel the same pang of hurt when rejected.

“No, of course, not.” My sister, always, hospitable, answered.

NO! I didn’t even have the chance to say that. Truth be told, I don’t want to immerse myself, again, with vague interpretations of Bible verses. I’ve had enough. That’s why I committed myself to carefully picking the right references to deepen my faith while holding on to what is true. Our charismatic community speaker advised us to refrain those kinds of short conversations, if possible, because they detract us from the true faith – the Catholic faith. These kind of evangelization can’t attain its purpose because interpreting the Bible by portion, just like any other law, is not right. The Bible must be interpreted as a whole. However, our archbishop said it’s okay to entertain them if we are strong enough to make wise comparisons in order for us to stay faithful to our Catholic faith. Yet, since my sister already acceded, then, I had no other choice than to be polite and welcoming, too.

“Well, you can. We will not mind.” Then, I smiled.

“There’s this question I want you to think about and answer: WHO IS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING IN THIS WORLD?” He handed me a pamphlet while he asked this question.

“Hmmmn…”

It took me a long pause because I was trying to collate everything I’ve learned in my every day Bible-reading, Church teaching, prayer meetings, and conversation over the dinner table regarding God’s provision no matter how imperfect the world is. On the array of choices, only “GOD”, “human”, and “etc.” were included. Satan wasn’t included. So, I trimmed down my number of choices into those provided.

“Uh…I think, both God and human. Because…ah, sorry. I was supposed to answer a single question.”

“No, you can. You can explain why you chose those.”

“I answered them because I believe God created everything – the heavens and the earth so He is in control. However, part of what God provided humans was free will – to choose what is right or wrong.”

“That’s right. Free will. You can find that in the Bible. But can you reconsider this: If God is in control, then, why are there crises, crimes, imperfection in this world? Maybe, it is not God. It’s…”

Satan. This thought lingered my mind due to the slippery slope I was put onto. And because somehow, Satan is the father of all lies, I partly and temporarily believed.

“Right! I thought of that, too. Because it was also said, ‘To be friends with the world is to be God’s enemy (James 4:4).’ If we look closely to this kind of argument, we can see loopholes:

First, if Satan is in control of the entire world, then, we are succumbing to the final conclusion that we cannot do anything anymore. “Control” connotes “power”. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, control is to have power over. Hence, are we saying that we are slaves over Satan’s power?

Remember Job. God “allowed” Satan to test him (Job 1:12). It was said, “God allowed…” That meant, it was, still, God who took control over the testing of Job. Not the devil himself because the devil hadn’t and will never overpower God (Luke 4:5-8).

Second, the increasing evil attacks in the world even bolster God’s unending power. Why? Satan had to maximize all his efforts, work restlessly all day and night only to deceive both the faithful and the unfaithful – his ultimate job. When God’s voice and power become stronger, that’s when he deafens the world with his tempting and empty promises. When he does this, that means, God’s power is, really working (Job 9:4).

Third, this evangelizer’s reference, “We all know that we belong to God, while the whole world lies in evil (1 John 5:19)” could be right, but it doesn’t coincide with the question they posed.

According to Christian Community Bible Commentaries on 1 John 5: 19 (THE WHOLE WORLD LIES IN EVIL), First Edition by Claretian Publications, “As has already been mentioned, this world belongs to God who made it good. Nevertheless, this world is not simply a building site wherein we work. It is first the place where the evil one competes with God. The evil side does not side with any group, atheist or materialist or whatever else, but everywhere transforms the best things into destroying idols – even among those looking for a more perfect life life: keep yourself from idols (v. 21).” Hence, the devil, always, competes with God. He is the source of all that envy and jealousy, putting into human’s mind the urgency to win out of vain. Let us all remember that Satan wanted more than what God gave him. He wanted to be like God (Isaiah 14: 12-15).

Lastly, upon Jesus’ resurrection, it does not only mean “to return to life” but to begin a new and transformed life (Christian Community Bible Commentaries on John 5:19 and John 6:60). To say that Satan, is, still, in control of the world, makes it pointless Jesus’ passion, death, and RESURRECTION. When he was raised from the dead, he has proven that sin and even death had no power over him. Hence, we, as members of Christ’s body, can conquer anything with him – even the stings of sin and the horrors of death. There is nothing that we cannot do because our hope, Jesus Christ, is alive! He is alive! Death as a consequence of sin had no authority over him because he himself was not subject to sin. Satan, then, is now overpowered by Jesus, our only hope.

“Thanks for your time, Samantha and Ming,” said the young man who also happened to be a government employee. The young woman, again, smiled.

“No problem.” Then, we vanished.

As we rode our way home, I kept thinking about this incident. Since I’ve already undergone few confusions in the past regarding false ideas, I prayed before for God’s discernment and wisdom to know what is true or false not only through Bible verses, but through God’s communication in a language that we know and through the circumstances that surround His people. After all, God does not only communicate with us through Bible verses. He does it in human experiences. Furthermore, it is not apt to base our interpretation from verses of the Bible. It must be interpreted according to passages. You can download this Bible guide for the year 2017 – it was made by Bible scholars all throughout the world through thorough research and study of what transgresses time. It can be seen that our Bible readings are uniform; the 1st reading, 2nd reading and Gospel in Philippines are the same in all countries because the Catholic Church is ONE, holy, and catholic. Plus, the passages were well-chosen and they correlate with each other.

To conclude this post, I just want to make it clear that I am not against any religion or sect. I am just striving to protect the one true faith. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by! I’ve got more to share to you.

Farther

More phenomena float in the ocean of suburban existence; more feuds pirouette at the galaxy of contemplation; and more unearthing revelations beyond the core of truth. How far will you go?

We all are impelled by different forces to conjure up ourselves. Generally, every person’s speech comprises of the usual words he hears or the tedious thoughts he encumbers every time. In some instances, one could possibly say what he wants to hear from someone or the least liked thing from the latter. What about you? What motivates you? This is more than a psychology-related write-up because I am not a psychologist. I am Samantha C. De Guzman.

Manifestations of the humankind also differ: beliefs are affected strongly by childhood cache of fears, intuitions, dreams, success or failure, and some other sentiments stocked through the hippocampus – the connections between neurons associated with memory. Let me take religious belief as an example. One can say that God is dead based on how he viewed a supreme being during childhood. Family plays a large role in defying a child’s intuitions as the former was his first teacher, the home his first school. Indubitably, a person could claim that God is not existing based on the cargo of millstones he has from the very beginning until this moment that no one seems to listen. Taking an atheist point of view, God is dead because no one can prove that He exists. A fallacy, isn’t it? You know a reasonable mind has a lot to prove than a shallow mind with nothing to disprove.

I taught Logic as part of every college student’s curriculum, a branch of Philosophy. And more than I could ever surmise, I enjoyed it! The struggles of teaching and learning while students learn more from you is the biggest premium than an educator could have apart from his impressive salary (Well, not for me. My salary is less than my daily needs). Applying both formal and material logic, I asked my students to distinguish between the truth and falsity of propositions, and let them prove or rebut to the class why or so. Debates were also applauded so you see great minds metamorphose into millennial personas fighting against the status quo.

Do you pick out now how vast and stupefying the human mind is? *speechless*

Let me get my idea straight now. As far as I am concern, I write when my mind flows like a river liberally sustaining the sea. When drought comes, you could not force me to dive with the ebb of typing. AM I REALLY STOPPING THE BEATING AROUND THE BUSH? SORRY. My motivation did not come from hatred or pain. It also did not originate from my own grace for it wholly came from a spirit so great that not even a human mind can probe: Holy Spirit. Honestly, it has been a while that I couldn’t get thoughts straight here. Most of my posts were solely illustrative probably waiting for another river to devour the waters of grace. So here I am now, the Spirit writing to you…

Beyond my arbitration, I surrendered to HIM, the Alpha and the Omega. Yes, I was exposed to brilliant ideas of great minds but the latter did not move my perplexity towards the Omnipotence and Omniscience of the Creator. Most, if not everything, yet, about me changed when I met HIM. All days are struggles, and  every second is a sacrifice. I gave the fight of arguing to prove that I am right; I succumbed to the undeniable fact that a human is prone to mistakes, and as far as you keep on faltering, the more you forgive others’ debt. Life with HIM is not easy, but it is worthy.

I ache to know HIM more in my life, veritably. If tears and wounds are all I have, I would take them all to HIM and use them for HIS Greater Glory! I was supposed to be a slave, but through his mighty humility, we are all made his friends through His son. Are not lords supposed to be served? But He was made known here and dwelt among us to serve us. Sweet? No. Beyond explanation.

When your motivation comes from above, things may not yet transpire, perfectly, but they will and even more than your uphill battles. In contrast, when a thing, person or idea is your anchor of inclination, things may come to pass in fast-paced…yet, in the same manner, they would elapse in a split second. Or, more frustratingly, when they did not go as planned, would cause us too much burden to bear. See? When your source of hope is above you, He can bless you and shower you compared to a fountain leveled the same with you or below you. What could possibly be the result? Chaos.

In my previous posts, I coined myself as HIS Defendant. And as long as He wants me to achieve this mission, I would serve Him and fulfill my life’s purpose in this world: to offer my life to HIM and to others. Besides, it was all I could offer and if it was your everything, wasn’t it more worthy than anything?

“To the one who had much, nothing was in excess; to the one who had little, nothing was lacking.” (2 Corinthians 8:15)

A Chat from GOD

“Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.”  (2 Peter 1:3-8)

“When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me” (1 Corinthians 13:11)

Why They Can’t Steal You

Image

“Happy are you when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of evil lies against you because you are my followers. Be happy and glad, for a great reward is kept for you in heaven. This is how the prophets who lived before you were persecuted.” (Matthew 5:11)

It really is a godly evening! To be one of Christ’s disciples, one must deny himself and take up his own cross. Yes, you read that right. Denying oneself is by turning your back to life impurities and by not repeating them. A true disciple follows Christ and everything is all right. But we were told that by living this world where insecurity sometimes reign, God is there to help us up like a little voice calling from the bottom of our hearts – this is what we call conscience. We may as well follow the rule of parallelism, and that, we may be consistent with our words and deeds. In a broader sense, being a disciple of Christ is not all of life’s pleasures. Remember that Christ himself face all of the evil’s temptations to lure him down, yet, GOD is always on the rescue to save His own son. In the same manner, as people of GOD, we are loved the same way He loves His own son. Never will He forsake us and let us fall into the trap of the evil because we are His children. Only a fool would ignore his child and let him fall down to a cliff.

Moreover, GOD the Almighty will not follow us. We must be the one to follow Him…and everything will be all right. How overflowing is the joy I am feeling right now! Nothing or no one can equalize with the joy that comes from the salvation of GOD! No matter what revelations or false talks I hear, that I have tons of haters out there, in which I had no idea for too long, I still am glad and I still praise the LORD! He didn’t leave me and He persecute even those who try to bury me down. With His stone axes, He destroys them while here I am peacefully sleeping and enjoying all the foods on the table that my good family prepared for us.

The Bible also says that when you love only your friends, there’s nothing special about that. Even the taxpayers do that! Why not love those who persecute you and pray for them, instead? The world would be more peaceful if we spread the love, not the animosity. (Matthew 5:43-48)

Even if you shoved to my face how many haters I have, GOD will always be bigger and will be the biggest among anything or anyone. What would a mere being do to me? Still, none of the least things I hear or not anyone can defeat GOD who shows mercy and gives justice to those who deserve them. I have GOD, my family, my few true friends, and my only love who give me the love that anyone would feel more than blessed of. 🙂

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek, too. And if someone takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat, as well.” (Matthew 5:38-40)

“Go on and try to bring me down, I will be rising from the ground…” No one can steal my faith in the Lord. No one can bribe me of my loyalty to my loved ones. No one can spare my dreams and principles. I live straight and do what I think is right. I accept my human fallibility and that will not stop me from following Him and will not destroy the precious gifts I am now enjoying. (Oh, what? Redundancy’s great!)

My dear readers, this is more than a warning. Know who you are dealing with and do not offend the wrong person. It is always better to be humble in everything that you do and just let people judge you for that. Anyway, words might stab but dignity and faith will not be perished. If words can paralyze, deeds can kill. But let GOD do the justice. Now that the Anti-Bullying Bill in the Philippines has already been passed as a law, you know that will happen next. Continue conquering the world with kindness. GOD will save us from life’s trap and even warns us before a trap was planned even by the best planner. Remember that no matter how excellent and clean a trap may seem, we are already shield by GOD. Just always be on the lookout and combat them with the teachings of Christ. Grow up. Save your time for more worthy tasks. Wise people demonstrate more and explicate less. A good person is not good when he has bad intentions. Jealousy could be the ugliest trait, don’t live with it.

Thanks for dropping by, children of GOD!

FOOLISH TALK

(Quoted from the book of Sirach, chapter 27, verses 11-15. A daily dose of Good News for the renewal of our faith and for the correction of our human mistakes.)

“When devout people talk, what they say always makes sense, but foolish people are always contradicting themselves. When you find yourself with stupid people, look for some excuse to leave, but when you are with serious-minded people, stay as long as you can.

The stories that foolish people tell are offensive, and they make jokes about the worst kinds of sin. When such people curse, it is enough to make your hair stand on end, and when they start arguing among themselves, all you can do is to stop up your ears. It is painful to listen to them insult each other, and such blistering can lead to violence.”
